March 2018

Spring Break, St. Patrick’s Day, March Madness, Easter week, NASCAR, pools opening up, and (generally) great weather…these are just some of the things that make Las Vegas great in March.  All of these distractions are also what makes March the least productive month of the year, nationally.  We all want to get away and play instead of work…so why not come play in Vegas?  March is one of the best times of the year to come to Las Vegas.

Spring is upon us…daylight savings starts March 11th, and the vernal equinox is on the 20th.

It seems that there is something innate that is built into the core of our being that senses this time of regeneration for the earth. There have always been celebrations in the spring honoring that spirit of rejuvenation. It is the end of winter. Spring is about re-birth, life after death, and a fresh start after a cold period in our lives. Spring brings us hope.  Springtime has been celebrated by every country and culture for as long as there have been countries and cultures.

Every aspect of March seems to be about celebrating life.  Spring Break…let’s drink!  St. Patrick’s Day…let’s drink green beverages!  NASCAR, March Madness…well, you get the idea.

March was named for Mars, the Roman God of war and a mythical ancestor of the Roman people by way of his wolf-suckling sons, Romulus and Remus.  March has historically been the perfect month for both farmers to resume farming, and warriors to resume warring…almost all major US-NATO led military operations since the invasion of Vietnam have begun in the month of March, i.e., Vietnam (initiated March 8, 1965), Iraq (March 20, 2003), and Libya (March 19, 2011) all follow the trend.

March contains a lot of interesting celebrations…March 3rd is I Want You to be Happy Day, and If Pets Had Thumbs Day. The 4th is Employee Appreciation Day, Holy Experiment Day, and Hug a GI Day. The 5th is Multiple Personality Day, the 8th, Be Nasty Day; the 9th, Panic Day; and the 11th Worship of Tools Day – us guys can relate. National Pi Day is the 14th - Why today? Because 3.14 is the value of Pi.  The 15th is the Ides of March, Dumbstruck Day, and Everything You Think is Wrong Day. The 16th is Everything You Do is Right Day; the 17th, Saint Patrick's Day; the 18th, Goddess of Fertility Day, Supreme Sacrifice Day; and the 20th is Extraterrestrial Abductions Day, and Proposal Day. The 22nd is National Goof Off Day; the 26th, Make Up Your Own Holiday Day; the 27th, National "Joe" Day; the 29th, Smoke and Mirrors Day; and finally, the 30th is I am in Control Day.

All the cool cats and “Atomic Dogs” will unite as “One Nation Under a Groove” when George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic bring the funk, the whole funk and nothing but the funk to House of Blues Las Vegas on Saturday, March 31, 2018.   Recording as both Parliament and Funkadelic, George Clinton revolutionized R&B during the ’70s, twisting soul music into funk by adding influences from several late ’60s heroes like Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, and Sly Stone. While Funkadelic pursued band-format psychedelic rock, Parliament engaged in a funk free-for-all, blending influences from the godfathers with freaky costumes and themes inspired by ’60s acid culture and science fiction. From its 1970 inception until Clinton’s dissolving of Parliament in 1980, Clinton hit the R&B Top Ten several times but truly excelled in two other areas: large-selling, effective album statements and the most dazzling, extravagant live show in the business.
