January 2018
2017…well, I’m glad that’s over.
2018 promises to be better, which is sadly not a high bar to clear. The year was characterized by divisiveness, hate, scandal…we’ve been given permission to be rude, to disrespect others and not care about anyone except ourselves. Truth has been twisted and lies have been vaunted…common sense has been thrown out the window, even with things we can see with our own eyes. Social Media has become a full contact sport…and everyone is “offended” at something. Has rampant narcissism become the new black? 2017 was not a kinder, gentler society. 2018 should be replete with a lot of New Year’s resolutions for a lot of people…
As for me…What should the New Year bring? We always want the New Year to be a fresh start…the beginning of some new adventure that will make us better people. It is a time to look into ourselves and find a way to somehow improve ourselves…either by taking away or adding something to our lives. Weight and exercise are always popular resolutions…I think about those things on a daily basis…usually while sitting on the sofa watching another rerun of “The Big Bang Theory.” I like achievable goals…something that I will and can do…just as a start, in the hopes that it will lead to bigger things, i.e. get off the sofa during one commercial and do a sit up…perhaps that will lead to two.
I also want to connect with people in a more meaningful way…which is funny because I communicate with more people now than I ever have in my life…but email, Facebook, notes, and texting aren’t really that meaningful…it’s a lot of people, but not a lot of depth. So my resolution is to sit down and handwrite letters to people…perhaps once a month as a start…maybe that will lead to two.
The most notable occurrence in Vegas this year was the October 1st massacre. It still affects us, and it still hurts. I wear my “Vegas Strong” pin with pride.
Our new hockey team, “The Golden Knights,” is doing great, and they have been great for our town. They have truly shown a strong community spirit. We like our Knights.
I continue to be disgusted by the fact that we now have to pay for parking…and because of that, I just don’t go down to the Strip anymore…only when I have to. Vegas was built on creating fantasies and dreams, the adult playground…but it’s turning into a generic resort town…only doing things that have been financially rewarding elsewhere. No one is taking a risk or trying something new. Shame on the casino executives for making Vegas…common.
There are still a few entertainment mavericks and practitioners out there that are trying to do something different. I applaud your efforts, and want to see more of your work.
All of the Christmas and Holiday shows and events are coming to a close, you may still be able to catch them for the first few days of January…but then it’s back to business.
