February 2017
February is a great month…it’s almost always beautiful out here. Lots of major events make February one of the best months of the year--- The Super Bowl, Valentine's Day, and MAGIC. February is the shortest month of the year, but it’s packed full. February is a busy time for conventions, and is always the start of new things as the city looks ahead to the summer. Late winter and early spring are good times to get shows opened so that they can establish themselves prior to the summer season.
One of our own entertainment icons has passed away…Rest in Peace, Tony Sacca.
He moved to Las Vegas in 1981 and has been a staple of the Strip ever since. His performing career goes back more than 50 years. Initial reports first emerged on the morning of January 31 saying that singer Tony Sacca had passed away at the age of 65 apparently from a heart attack. His show, “Vegas the Story,” had just been extended at Bally’s, and the San Gennaro Festival will never be the same without him. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from The White House in 2015. He is survived by his wife Josette Leblond. Sacca has a star outside the New York, New York Hotel and Casino and is located next to Elvis Presley’s star. He was an entertainer, TV host, Producer, singer, and songwriter. His absence will certainly be felt throughout the entertainment community. This just happened, and I am still in shock at the news. My words fail me a bit, but I have to get this newsletter out. I’ve known Tony for 15 years…condolences to his family. We’ll miss you, Tony.
In Memory of Tony Sacca
By Minnie Madden
I heard of Tony’s death today, and needless to say it caused a lot of reflection, after the initial shock and sadness.
Tony and his late brother Robert and I met in Wildwood, New Jersey, in the early seventies. I was in a dance production show (probably named Viva something) working at the Hurricane Club for a producer/director Joe Cavalier. The boys were performing in another club down the street.
We spent some time talking about show business and I can safely say we were all probably cut from the same cloth….entertainment or nothing. … Not surprising that we all ended up in Las Vegas.
Periodically we would bump into each other at an event in Vegas and reminisce and laugh.
A number of years ago...Chuck Rounds, editor of CallBack news, was doing an entertainment story and wanted some of my old photos from past shows.. I don’t have many photos from the past; and Chuck knowing that I had worked in the same town as Tony reached out to him. Oddly enough Tony had them and volunteered to bring them over. They were, and are still hilarious.
I was very moved by that. He went out of his way to help. I believe that that speaks volumes about someone.
Each of us will remember him in our own way…I’m thrilled that I knew him before Vegas, for whatever reason it makes me feel lucky.
When someone as vital as Tony leaves us I cannot help but think that we all take a moment and reflect. Until I got older, I thought that legacies were for presidents and scientists. Alas, they are for all of us. What will we leave behind? What will we be remembered for?
Tony was from Philadelphia, Pa…we met in New Jersey...but for all that knew him…..Tony was all Vegas. He leaves a large legacy.
Vegas grieves today as the loss of one of our own. He remains in our history and in our hearts.
After 43 years in Las Vegas, the Fern Adair Conservatory of the Arts has closed for the retirement of Fern and Ray the last day of January 2017. The Conservatory was the home to scores and scores of dancers (including my daughter.) It was another one of Las Vegas’ iconic institutions…now gone.
The Super Bowl…the Atlanta Falcons and the New England Patriots are set to face off on February 5th. The Patriots are slight favorites in this matchup (they are favored by 3,) but the small margin indicates this game could be considered closer to a toss-up. And then there are the commercials…The average cost of a 30-second ad for the Super Bowl has crept up to $5 million this year, from an estimated $4.8 million last year. The commercials are a lot of people’s favorite part of the game.
Some of the interesting days that occur in February are: The 2nd is National Groundhog Day. February 4 is National Thank a Mailman Day. February 5 is National Shower with a Friend Day. The 7th is National Periodic Table Day. The 8th is National Kite Flying Day. The 11th is National Don’t Cry Over Spilled Milk day. February 17 is National Random Acts of Kindness Day. Also February is An Affair to Remember Month, and the 3rd Week of the month is International Flirting Week.
MAGIC is in town the 21st – 23rd to introduce the spring fashions. MAGIC is one of the biggest conventions of the year with nearly 100k attendees...but in addition to this convention; there are also a couple of hundred other conventions that hit the city this month. MAGIC is the world's largest fashion marketplace, comprised of ten unique communities showcasing the latest in apparel, footwear, accessories, and manufacturing. Every February and August the retail industry convenes in Las Vegas to spot and shop the latest trends in men’s, women’s, juniors' and children’s apparel, footwear, and accessories.
February 14th falls on a Tuesday this year. Not the best day of the week to come to Vegas for a wedding. Look for a lighter than usual schedule for the chapels on that day. Normally, Las Vegas hosts nearly 10,000 weddings per month, and on Valentine’s day, they should do about 7,000…which is a sharp drop from times when the 14th lands on a weekend.
Broadway Bound will present “All Shook Up,” a high-energy musical comedy built around a number of songs made famous by Elvis Presley, February 24 – March 5, 2017 at the Summerlin Library. Loosely based on William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, Elvis Presley's songs come to life on stage in “All Shook Up.” The musical takes place in 1955, somewhere in middle America, where one girl's dream and a surprise visit from a mysterious leather-jacketed, guitar-playing stranger help a small town to discover the magic of romance and the power of rock ‘n’ roll. Tickets for “All Shook Up” are $15 each. Tickets to the following performances are on sale now and may be purchased by calling (702) 838-5131 or online at BroadwayBoundLV.com:

Grab your loved one and get your romance on with the Pulitzer Prize-nominated play by A.R. Tape Face accesses the inner child in everyone. Through simple, clever and charming humour, he has created one of the most accessible and enjoyable shows the world has ever seen. Drawing on a heritage that includes silent film, mime, magic, puppetry, Motown and the films of Patrick Swayze, he is a pensive, curious soul approaching every object and audience member as a potential friend – or plaything. Since the creation of Tape Face, his shows have sold out around the world during which time he has become a critically acclaimed silent sensation with Simon Cowell comparing him to a modern Charlie Chaplin.

The Four Seasons (group members 1960–1966) were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, and joined the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999. With 71 chart hits, including 40 in the Top 40, 19 in the Top 10 and eight No. 1s, they are one of the best-selling musical groups of all time, having sold an estimated 170 million records worldwide.
