January 2017
And, the New Year is upon us… Yes. It’s a time to make resolutions and to be (indeed) resolved to do…something else; something different, something more, or something less (please let’s do something different this year.) Resolutions (for a lot of people) seem to be centered on getting rid of something in your life, and I have usually looked at it as wanting to add something to my life. I realized, however, that all resolutions are really about the same thing…working to be the best version of ourselves that we can be.
2017 is upon us…is this a good thing? Are we looking forward to it? I know that I’m glad that 2016 is over…WTF!? As I look back, I see a vast wasteland of scorched earth that used to be our own humanity and dignity. 2016 certainly brought out the worst of us. I didn’t realize that we were so xenophobic, homophobic, prejudice, misogynistic, bigoted…and well, ignorant. We threw aside dignity and integrity. We have had to re-evaluate our own principles. We became the lowest possible common denominator. We embraced false news and lies…even when we were told they were fake and made up…people still hung onto them as the truth. It was a divisive and angry year that created the Divided States of America. A country that now looks at compromise as a bad thing, a sign of weakness…even when everyone knows that real solutions usually lie somewhere between “I’m right and you’re wrong,” our representatives just don’t do it because it doesn’t serve their own selfish purposes. None of them seem to embrace working for the greater good anymore…just what serves their own needs.
I am an entertainment writer…why am I addressing national and global issues? It’s simple. It affects everything…even the shows and entertainment in Las Vegas. We will have a Labor Secretary that doesn’t believe in workers’ rights. We will have a Secretary of Education that doesn’t believe in public education. In a town that has a huge population of transient low end wage workers…it matters.
We lost so many great people this year…stars, notables, legends…gone. Debbie Reynolds hit me the hardest. I saw her on many occasions and even worked in her former casino. It’s time to watch, “Singing in the Rain.”
I want this year to be about building, making, and creating (this past year seems to only have been about tearing everything down.) I want to create art, draw something, build something, and write something. I want to surround myself with fans, and in turn, become a fan of something or someone. I want to pursue dreams. I want hope for the future.
Now…I’ve got to ask. What the hell happened to Vegas while I was gone? I am absolutely disgusted by the two major corporations that control most of the casinos in Vegas. It is becoming a generic resort town…no character, pay for parking, no new shows, nothing original. In my mind, I look at all the executives from both Harrah’s and MGM/Mirage as castrated eunuchs that just somnambulistically roam the hallways of their offices and only bow their heads and say, “yes, sir,” to whatever the accountants and bookkeepers say. THIS IS VEGAS!! This city was built on fantasies and dreams. It embraced the outrageous. We are Las Vegas!! We are not supposed to be any other town…but that’s what these gutless, spineless corporate executives are striving to make it. No one is trying to be different. All decisions are being based on what is happening in other cities…parking? …well, other cities are charging for it, I guess we should to… Entertainment? …well, this show did good somewhere else…I guess we should bring it here… Comps? …well, other cities make patrons work for their comps…I guess we should to… Hospitality seems to be a thing of the past…except if you pay for it. Vegas was a city of hospitality, of originality…we used to have character. We need to bring some of that back. We need to be different…especially since there are now casinos popping up across the country. We need to be different. Shame on the casino executives for trying to make Vegas…common.
There are those entertainment mavericks and practitioners out there that do make a difference. I still applaud them most enthusiastically. I want to see more of your work.

Powerhouse Broadway belter Niki Scalera celebrates the life and career of Dame Shirley Bassey with her one-woman cabaret concert, “Bassey and Me,” at The Smith Center’s elegant 240-seat Cabaret Jazz showroom on Saturday evening, Jan. 14, 7 p.m. and Sunday afternoon, Jan. 22, 2:30 p.m. A Broadway veteran, Scalera brings her unique perspective of the extraordinary life and career of British mega-star Bassey to The Smith Center just in time to celebrate Bassey’s 80th birthday. Las Vegas audiences will remember seeing Scalera in “We Will Rock You” at the Paris and as one of the featured vocalists with the Las Vegas Philharmonic. She appeared on Broadway in Disney’s “Tarzan.” Then, while starring on Broadway as Penny Pingleton in “Hairspray,” she began bringing her fascination with Bassey to the stage with a cabaret concert at New York’s Laurie Beechman Theatre. Returning to Las Vegas, Scalera teamed up with long-time friend and colleague, Keith Thompson, musical director of “Jersey Boys,” and co-founder and host of “The Composers Showcase,” and began developing the concert into a musical and theatrical tour-de-force that not only highlights the music and career of Bassey, but also showcases the spectacular vocal prowess of Scalera, one of Vegas’ most thrilling singers.

The new Cirque du Soleil touring show inspired by James Cameron’s record-breaking movie AVATAR, TORUK – The First Flight, is coming to Las Vegas for a limited engagement. The show is presented at T-Mobile Arena for one week only, January 18 - 22 as part of a global tour in arenas around the world. Inspired by James Cameron’s AVATAR, TORUK – The First Flight transports you to the world of Pandora in a visually stunning live setting. Experience a storytelling odyssey through a new world of imagination, discovery and possibility.
Through a riveting fusion of cutting-edge visuals, puppetry and stagecraft buoyed by a soaring cinematic score, Cirque du Soleil applies its unique signature style to James Cameron’s imaginary world and “makes the bond” between two kindred artistic visions that capture the imagination. This live immersive experience also bears the distinct signature of directors and multimedia innovators Michel Lemieux and Victor Pilon. It is a living ode to the Na’vi’s symbiotic coexistence with nature and their belief in the basic interconnectedness of all living things. Narrated by a “Na’vi Storyteller” and populated by unforgettable characters, TORUK – The First Flight is a mythical tale set thousands of years before the events depicted in the film AVATAR, and before any humans ever set foot on Pandora. When a natural catastrophe threatens to destroy the sacred Tree of Souls, Ralu and Entu, two Omatikaya boys on the brink of adulthood, fearlessly decide to take matters into their own hands. Upon learning that Toruk can help them save the Tree of Souls, they set out, together with their newfound friend Tsyal, on a quest high up in the Floating Mountains to find the mighty red and orange predator that rules the Pandoran sky. Prophecy is fulfilled when a pure soul rises among the clans to ride Toruk for the first time and save the Na’vi from a terrible fate.
