RESORTS WORLD NAMES FOUR MUSIC SUPERSTARS AS HEADLINERS
Four mega music stars Celine Dion, Carrie Underwood, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan will become the founding headliners at the Strip’s new 3,500-room luxury destination Resorts World opening June 24 and call The Theatre at Resorts World their performing home. The 5,000-capacity, world-class theatre will open in November 2021 and is exclusively programmed and operated by Concerts West / AEG Presents.
The star-studded performances will begin with Celine Dion’s return to the Las Vegas Strip with a brand-new show and a special opening night performance to benefit COVID-19 Relief on Friday, Nov. 5. Carrie Underwood follows with a six-show run of an all-new production beginning Wednesday, Dec. 1. Katy Perry will take the stage on Wednesday, Dec. 29, to launch an eight-show run including New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day performances. Luke Bryan will keep the party going in 2022 when he kicks off his six-show engagement on Friday, Feb. 11.
The four artists join Resorts World’s previously announced nightlife headliners Zedd and Tiësto. All six stars recently appeared in the resort’s colorful commercial in anticipation of the resort’s big June 24 opening. The commercial premiered during the Academy Awards on April 25.
CRISS ANGEL MINDFREAK® WILL RETURN TO PLANET HOLLYWOOD
Criss Angel, after a 14-month pause, will return to his custom-designed Las Vegas stage at Planet Hollywood on July 7 for the reopening of “MINDFREAK®,” a euphoric visual spectacular. “MINDFREAK” features Angel’s ground-breaking illusions and revolutionary magic including his signature levitation voted “The Greatest Illusion of All Time” by the most prestigious magic organization in the world, the International Brotherhood of Magicians. Tickets start at $69. Performances will be Wednesday-Sunday at 7 p.m.
Angel’s visionary magic is set against a digitally interactive backdrop displaying more surface area of video than any other production in the world, a state-of-the-art theatrical surround sound system with more than 150 speakers, over 2,000 lighting instruments and countless visual effects and pyrotechnics. Audience members are immersed from the moment they enter the interactive lobby area and throughout the entire performance by way of 3D technology and video mapping.
MUSEUM OF SELFIES TO OPEN AT THE LINQ PROMENADE JUNE 1
The new, permanent location of Museum of Selfies will open at The LINQ Promenade on Tuesday, June 1 next to the Welcome to Las Vegas gift store. The interactive exhibition provides guests premium selfie opportunities featuring works by artists from around the world.
A family-friendly attraction, Museum of Selfies will feature photo opportunities such as the wild Upside-Downroom, joyful Emoji Pool, optical illusioned-filled Bathroom Selfie and many more. New vignettes exclusive to the Las Vegas location will include the Private Jet Experience, an installation built to give all visitors the chance to plunge themselves into the world of luxury. Visitors are encouraged to use their smartphones and selfie sticks to make the most of the photo opportunities.
Museum of Selfies will be open Sunday-Thursday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday-Saturday 10 a.m. to midnight. Tickets start at $29 for adults and $22 for children ages 3 to 12 while kids under age 3 are free.
SIEGEL’S BAGELMANIA TO OPEN ADJACENT TO NEW CONVENTION CENTER
Siegel’s Bagelmania has been a local hidden gem since 1989 behind the Strip’s glitz and glamour, where the “who’s who” of Las Vegas gather for from-scratch authentic Jewish recipes and handmade pastries. With a long history of serving the best New York-style boiled bagels and Jewish delicatessen fare in Las Vegas, Siegel’s Bagelmania will move to its new flagship location at 252 Convention Center Drive, which is adjacent to the brand-new expansion of the Las Vegas Convention Center, and open on Friday, May 28. The new Bagelmania hours will be daily 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. with plans to become a 24-hour restaurant.
The 10,000-square-foot flagship venue will feature an expansive dining room, private dining area for parties and events, spacious outdoor patio area, sprawling to go delicatessen and bakery with a pop up Pinkbox doughnuts, and full bar with signature cocktails and gaming.
The recent Review Journal’s “Best of Las Vegas Bakery” Award winner also serves an array of sandwiches piled high with toppings. There is already a Bagelmania greeting visitors inside Terminal 1 at McCarran International Airport.
THE WHISKYX WILL TAKEOVER THE COSMOPOLITAN’S POOL OCT. 23
The Cosmopolitan and The WhiskyX will present an evening of elevated whisky tastings, live musical performances, restaurant bites and more at The Boulevard Pool on Saturday, Oct. 23. The event will provide guests a curated mix of more than 60 whiskies from around the world, live sets from national recording artists, a live podcast-viewing with comedian Adam Carolla, and an array of dishes from The Cosmopolitan’s award-winning Restaurant Collection including Momofuku by David Chang, Bāng Bar, Jaleo by José Andrés, Lardo, STK, Holsteins and Hattie B’s Hot Chicken. Tickets, which start at $75, go on sale on Friday, May 21 on Ticketmaster.
The evening will culminate in a concert. This year’s headliners are Alabama-based rock and roll soul band St. Paul & the Broken Bones, and multi-platinum artists Fitz & the Tantrums, who have quickly grown from independent upstarts to bona fide hitmakers. Special guests will include the Adam Carolla Show Live from the WhiskyX. The evening will be hosted by Dan Dunn, best-selling author and creator of the podcast “What We’re Drinking with Dan Dunn.” Additional special guests and programming to be announced.
‘MYSTÈRE’ BY CIRQUE DU SOLEIL BEGINS AGAIN JUNE 28
The Intermission is Over! More than a year after theater lights dimmed, “Mystère™” by Cirque du Soleil at Treasure Island will return to the stage for its first performance on Monday, June 28.
“Mystère” is the original must-see Cirque du Soleil production combining high-energy acrobatics with dramatic dance set to the thunderous rhythms of the Taïko drums. The new updated schedule includes nightly performances Friday through Tuesday at 7 and 9:30 p.m. Effective Sept. 18, dark days will be Thursday and Friday. Tickets start at $75.
LAS VEGAS MONORAIL WILL REOPEN MAY 27
The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) has announced the Las Vegas Monorail will resume operations at 7 a.m. on Thursday, May 27, in time for Memorial Day weekend and upon completion of all systems safety inspections. Operating hours will be 7 a.m. daily and until midnight on Mondays, 2 a.m. Tuesdays-Thursdays, and 3 a.m. Fridays-Sundays. Ticket options include single ride tickets and several unlimited ride options. Service desks are open daily at all stations except the Las Vegas Convention Center Station.
The 3.9-mile elevated system enables passengers to travel the length of the resort corridor in less than 15 minutes, at speeds of up to 50 miles per hour. Trains will continue to arrive every 4-8 minutes at the system’s seven stations from the MGM Grand to the Sahara. The system is 100% electric and runs zero emission trains, therefore reducing both emissions.
The Monorail debuted in 1995 running between the MGM Grand and Bally’s with two trains previously operated at Walt Disney World. The system expanded to its current footprint on July 15, 2004, debuting nine Bombardier Innovia 200 trains built specifically for the Las Vegas Monorail system. The LVCVA acquired the Monorail in December 2020 to ensure it as an important transportation option.
MGM PROPERTIES START POOLSIDE MOBILE ORDERING AND DELIVERY
Pool goers at MGM Resorts’ Las Vegas Strip properties can now order their next cocktail, beer or burger on a smartphone and have it delivered directly to their lounge chair or daybed. The company has launched the city’s first in-seat poolside mobile ordering system at all properties, and at The Signature at MGM Grand by June 1.
Each seat location is assigned a chair tag and number, along with a unique QR code that, once scanned, opens a familiar mobile ordering platform where the food and beverage selection process begin. From extra guacamole on a burrito bowl and medium temperature burger preference to making that margarita a double, guests can personalize every aspect of an order.
At checkout, guests enter their seat number, name and payment information into the program for the order to be processed. Following, a confirmation screen will display the order number and guest name once the payment has been accepted, along with the option to have a receipt sent via text or email to the mobile device. When the order is ready, an MGM Resorts employee will deliver the items to the guests’ seat location, ensuring a seamless process.
COUNTRY THROWDOWN DEBUTS AT CONTAINER PARK
Downtown Container Park is starting a Downtown Country Throwdown bi-weekly event on Friday, May 21 featuring line dancing and lessons, live country music and drink specials. At 6 p.m. Container Park’s own Dream Dance LV will host line dancing lessons on The Lawn. From 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., dancers can show off their newfound, boot-scootin’ skills accompanied by Country Throwdown’s first live band, Cross Country Road.
Backed by Wild Turkey Bourbon, Container Park’s trio of bars Oak & Ivy, Downtown Terrace and Bin 702 have crafted a menu of drink specials. Cocktails include the Burnin’ Branch, Rhinestone Cowboy and Wild Turkey Lemonade. Entry to Downtown Container Park’s Country Throwdown is free and after 9 p.m. is limited to 21+. Country Throwdown will take place the first and third Friday of the month.
MARRIAGE CAN BE MURDER’ TWO NIGHTS AT HENNESSEY’S TAVERN
The popular interactive dinner show “Marriage Can Be Murder” is coming to Hennessey’s Tavern across from Neonopolis downtown for pop-up performances on May 29 and 30 at 7 p.m. This is a chance to eat, drink and play detective while enjoying murderous fun.
The four menu options with salad and dessert are Dead Meat, Fowl Play, Hasta La Pasta and Murder Burger. CALL IT THE SHOWROOM SCRAMBLE
Coming out of the pandemic is like coming out of a cave and seeing the light. You’re left wondering what happened while you were away and what happens next. It’s appearing entertainment in the form of the smaller shows, which were more affordable, are going to struggle to find somewhere to go especially with Caesars Entertainment cutting back.
Let’s go over some of the shows not returning. The sexy Chippendales won’t be back at the Rio. Hypnotist Anthony Cools, who has had a show in an intimate showroom at Paris for nearly two decades is out, which also means “Sex Tips” and “Friends! The Musical Parody,” which had relocated after the showroom at the D closed, share the room and will be homeless. “X Rocks” at Bally’s and “Bronx Wanderers” at Harrah’s Showroom, where it had just moved after headlining at The LINQ, will no doubt be looking.
Like in the talent shows when they get to the finale cuts, we can move on to what shows are saved. “Menopause the Musical” and “X Country” will be at Harrah’s Cabaret, and “Piff the Magic Dragon” and “X Burlesque” at the Flamingo.
Wayne Newton is expected to return to Cleopatras Barge at Caesars Palace, the Righteous Brothers to Harrah’s Showroom, and “Ru Paul’s Drag Race Live! to the Flamingo Showroom on Aug. 5.
MANY RESORTS ARE BACK TO 100% CASINO FLOOR CAPACITY
To regain 100% capacity on casino floors, resorts must meet the Nevada Gaming Control Board’s requirements. Most of the resort corridor’s biggest properties were affected by the Nevada Gaming Control Board decision based on workforce vaccination rates. To expedite safeguards many have provided employees on-site vaccination clinics.
Among the casinos operating at 100% are The STRAT, all nine Caesars Entertainment properties, all nine MGM resorts, nine Boyd establishments, The Cosmopolitan, Wynn, Encore, Silverton, Station Casinos Red Rock, Green Valley Ranch, and Palace, Boulder, Sunset and Santa Fe station properties.
CHEF CHARLIE PALMER HOLDS PIGS & PINOT COOKING CLASS
While waiting to host one of their wine-country events in person, Chef Charlie Palmer and featured wineries virtually hold the Pigs & Pinot cooking class series. The class on Thursday, May 27 will feature Tim Bucher of Trattore Farms 2019 Pinot Noir, Laughlin Ranch, Russian River Valley.
The 45- to 60-minute live zoom demonstration with Q&A is $75 per person.
Bucher at age 16 made his first wine from a two-acre vineyard he and his siblings purchased together. That project has grown into Trattore Farms with vineyards and olive groves in Dry Creek Valley where he produces premium wines and artisanal olive oils along with his wife, Mary Louise. In addition to his agricultural roots, Bucher has brought many new innovations to Trattore, including advanced sustainability control systems, making them a leading-edge operation in protecting the environment.
NEON MUSEUM CALLS FOR 2021 ARTIST IN RESIDENCE ENTRIES
Now in its sixth year, The Neon Museum is calling for entries for its 2021 National Artist Residency. The Neon Museum Artist Residency program is designed to expand the interpretive potential of the museum collection while providing a U.S.-based contemporary artist the opportunity to create new work in an unconventional setting. Deadline for entries is Sunday, July 11 on the museum’s website. The 2021 residency program will span six weeks from Monday, Oct. 25 to Sunday, Dec. 5. The first two weeks will be conducted virtually, and the final four weeks will be completed on location in Las Vegas.
During the winning candidate’s Las Vegas tenure, the community will have opportunities via public programming to engage with the artist and his/her work. Upon completion of the residency, the museum requests the artist contribute a mutually agreed-upon piece of art to the museum’s collection.
ELYSIAN AT THE PALMS HAD GRAND OPENNG
Last weekend, Claire Sinclair, 2011 Playboy Playmate of the Year and star of the former Las Vegas show “Pin Up,” celebrated her 30th birthday at the grand opening of Elysian Living’s newest property, Elysian at The Palms, at 3850 W. Nevso Drive. Playmate friends of Sinclair were in attendance to celebrate her birthday, including actress and May 2021’s Playboy International Covergirl, Renee Olstead, and YouTube personality, Carlotta Champagne.
