MYSTIC FALLS PARK® AT SAM’S TOWN MAKES THE SEASON BRIGHT

Sam’s Town on Boulder Highway is lighting up the holiday season with the return of Mystic Falls Park®’s festive seasonal display, featuring all-new décor and more than 26,000 points of light through Friday, Jan. 1, 2021.

Dating back to 1994, the holiday-themed attraction at Mystic Falls Park® is a time-honored tradition. This year, the indoor atrium’s new theme features animated teddy bears which come to life and can be seen playing, dancing, and decorating the park. The plush, animatronic bears were handmade this year by a family in Italy, and have traveled from Italy to Spain, Portugal, and across the United States to Las Vegas.

The whimsical winter display has an 18-foot Christmas tree decorated with glimmering red and gold ornaments and 5,300 twinkling lights, topped with a starburst tree topper. Garland-wrapped lampposts, streamers and wreaths fill the atrium, embellished with hundreds of lights, ornaments and red holiday bows. As guests stroll through the park, they can also enjoy seeing blankets of snow, animatronic characters wearing Santa hats, giant pinecones, and beautifully wrapped gift boxes. Mystic Falls Park®’s gazebo is also covered in snow and decorated with garlands, a sparkling icicle trimming and large candy canes at the entrance.

In addition to the holiday attraction being free, families can drop off letters for Santa in a special mailbox located under the gazebo. The park’s new holiday décor can be viewed from home by tuning into the attraction’s live Sam’s Town webcam.

HISTORY MUSEUM DISPLAYS RECOVERED NATIVE AMERICAN ARTIFACTS

Earlier this year, the Bureau of Land Management and Las Vegas Natural History Museum recovered from Nevada caves several artifacts from highly sensitive archaeology sites. Now on display at the Museum, the artifacts are believed to be from the Lowland group of Virgin Branch Anasazi Puebloans who lived in the region near the Virgin River and Moapa Valley in Nevada from about 300 B.C. to A.D. 1225.

The artifacts recovered include stone-boiling tongs, a basket, and various ceramics. Most notably, a complete Tusayan Ware ceramic pot was found, still encased in its original netting, offering scientists great insight into life at that time.

The Museum’s Collections Manager and Archeologist, Laura A. Benedict cited research by Romero in 2014 that suggests, “The corrugation and the netting may have assisted in transporting the finished jars to where they would be used: corrugation helps maintain a good grip on ceramics and the netting may have been used for handling the jars.” When asked about the recovered items, Benedict added, “We are incredibly excited to bring such rare and beautiful artifacts to the public.”

The Las Vegas Natural History Museum began in 1989 with a small group of citizens. After very humble beginnings, this private nonprofit museum is now a Smithsonian Affiliate, accredited with the American Alliance of Museums, and is a federal and state repository for fossils and artifacts.
