#VegasStrong
It has been one month since the mass shooting in Las Vegas…and my heart still sinks at the thought of it all. I couldn’t talk about it to anyone for a couple of weeks…it was just too painful. I roamed around in a daze for days. My experience of this situation is the same as the bulk of the people of Las Vegas, with one degree of separation. My eyes filled with tears when I went to the blood bank and saw a thousand people waiting in line. I brought donations down to the convention center and was turned away because there was just no more room to store or distribute more goods. There was more outpouring…the crosses and memorial at the Las Vegas sign…the Healing Garden…the massive donations to the victim funds…the goodness of all these people just wanting to do something… I had to take a flight out of McCarran shortly after the incident, and the flight path took me right over the sight…the aftermath was still visible…the broken windows were still there… The night of the shooting, my phone rang…where are you? Are you on the Strip? Are you safe? I had been on the Strip…I had even driven by the concert…I remember hearing the music wafting over the stands as I passed…I’ll probably remember that sound forever now…by the time I pulled in my driveway, the shooting had started. Did you know anyone? Yes. In fact, I know a lot of people who were there...both attending the event and working the event. I know a couple of people that were shot. I know people that were trampled by the crowd. I know people that stayed huddled in fear. I know people that got out safely…and I know every one of them was severely traumatized. I didn’t know any of the people who were killed. Reporters kept asking if the police trained for something like this…and the honest answer is no…not to this particular scenario. No one had thought of this, because this was unthinkable. Security at outdoor events will now be completely rethought…more security, more blinds, more spotters…more… It all makes you both hate the world and love the world at the same time…
November 2017
November in Las Vegas is a wonderful time—good cheer and good weather abounds throughout the city. Convention business is bustling with several monster conventions coming into town that have a couple of hundred thousand attendees. Holiday shows are starting to appear all over the city. Thanksgiving is just around the corner…and has become a major event in town. A lot of people take advantage of the long weekend and spend extra time in Vegas, and most restaurants have Thanksgiving offerings and specials, which will rival even the finest of home cooked meals. Las Vegas wants your business and has a lot of offer. Many of the Hotels are offering outrageous deals for you to come and stay here.
Thanksgiving is one of my most favorite holidays. It’s a truly American holiday, and it’s all about friends, family, and just being thankful…and of course, there’s the food.
November 26, 1789 - The first American holiday occurred, proclaimed by President George Washington to be Thanksgiving Day, a day of prayer and public thanksgiving in gratitude for the successful establishment of the new American republic.
But the first Thanksgiving had its roots in September 1620. A small ship called the Mayflower left Plymouth, England, carrying 102 passengers—an assortment of religious separatists seeking a new home where they could freely practice their religion in the New World. After a treacherous crossing that lasted 66 days, they dropped anchor near the tip of Cape Cod, far north of their intended destination. One month later, the Mayflower crossed Massachusetts Bay, where the Pilgrims, as they are now commonly known, began the work of establishing a village at Plymouth. Throughout that first brutal winter, most of the colonists remained on board the ship, where they suffered from exposure, scurvy and outbreaks of contagious disease. Only half of the Mayflower’s original passengers and crew lived to see their first New England spring. In March, the remaining settlers moved ashore, where they received a visit from an Abenaki Indian who greeted them in English. Several days later, he returned with another Native American, Squanto, a member of the Pawtuxet tribe who had been kidnapped by an English sea captain and sold into slavery before escaping to London and returning to his homeland on an exploratory expedition. Squanto taught the Pilgrims, weakened by malnutrition and illness, how to cultivate corn, extract sap from maple trees, catch fish in the rivers and avoid poisonous plants. He also helped the settlers forge an alliance with the Wampanoag, a local tribe, which would endure for more than 50 years and tragically remains one of the sole examples of harmony between European colonists and Native Americans. In November 1621, after the Pilgrims’ first corn harvest proved successful, Governor William Bradford organized a celebratory feast and invited a group of the fledgling colony’s Native American allies, including the Wampanoag chief Massasoit. Now remembered as American’s “first Thanksgiving”—the festival lasted for three days.
November is the month for: Child Safety Protection, Adoption Awareness, Epilepsy, Model Railroads, Native American Heritage, Peanut Butter Lovers, and Sleep Comfort.
Here are the interesting days…the 1st is All Saints Day, and the 2nd is All Soul's Day. The third is Housewife's Day, the 4th is King Tut Day; the 5th is Gunpowder Day, Guy Fawkes Day, and Men Make Dinner Day. The 6th is Marooned without a Compass Day and Saxophone Day. The 8th is Cook Something Bold Day and Election Day. The 9th is Chaos Never Dies Day - you've got that right. The 13th is Sadie Hawkins Day, the 18th Occult Day, the 20th Absurdity Day, Beautiful Day, and Universal Children's Day, the 21st False Confession Day, the 23rd is Thanksgiving! And, it’s Evolution Day, and All Our Uncles are Monkeys Day. The 24th is Black Friday and Buy Nothing Day...does anyone abide by it!? It is also Pins and Needles Day and You're Welcome Day. The 28th is Make Your Own Head Day and Red Planet Day, and finally, the 30th is Stay At Home Because You Are Well Day.
Turn your clocks back at 2:00 am on November 5th…Daylight savings time is over!
I hope that everyone has successfully survived the Vegas Halloween. A friend of mine says that Halloween in Las Vegas is a full contact sport…so now, we can now officially start the Holiday Season! Most stores have already put Christmas decorations up, and the ads for holiday merchandise have already been airing all over the place.

Blues Traveler started their career in the late ’80s, and went on to become one of the most widely known artists in the jam-band scene. In celebration of their monumental 30 year career, Blues Traveler will embark on a 30th Anniversary tour this fall. Continuing the tradition of sitting in with other bands, Blues Traveler’s John Popper has sat in with countless artists all over the world, including Foo Fighters, Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers, Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, Keith Urban, and even alternative acts like Passion Pit. With an open mind, it’s no surprise that on the group’s latest release, Blow Up The Moon, they took this a step further to enlist a range of artists across the musical spectrum, representing country, pop, reggae and hip-hop, on their first-ever collaborative album.
