This is the 17th year anniversary of this newsletter. With both the entertainment news and show reviews, my goal has been to let people know what to expect when they come to town or want to go to a show. I am proud to have been able to bring you the news of what is happening in Las Vegas entertainment, and I look forward to the years to come.
Las Vegas weather in August sucks. It is monsoon season...so in addition to being horribly hot, there is a chance of thunderstorms...which adds an uncomfortable amount of humidity to the air. The best thing to do in Las Vegas in August is to be in a casino or a showroom.
August is the eighth month of the year in the Gregorian calendar and its predecessor, the Julian calendar. The month of August was originally named Sextilis in Latin since it was the sixth month in the ancient Roman calendar. It became the eighth month with a length of 29 days around 700 BCE when January and February were added to the year. Julius Caesar added two days to the month around 45 BCE. It was later renamed to honor Augustus Caesar in 8 BCE. It is considered the busiest time for tourism because it falls in the main school summer holiday period. Its birth flower is the gladiolus or poppy which represents beauty, strength, love, marriage and family. The birthstone for August is the peridot or onyx.

The producers of the world’s biggest magic show, The Illusionists have teamed up with the award winning puppeteers from War Horse to present a thrilling turn of the century circus spectacular. The MAGIC convention comes to town August 13 - 15. This monster show kicks off the start of the fall convention season. The fall show of MAGIC will bring in over 85,000 people. MAGIC is the world's largest fashion marketplace, comprised of eleven unique communities showcasing the latest in apparel, footwear, accessories, and manufacturing. Every February and August the retail industry convenes in Las Vegas to spot and shop the latest trends. From its humble beginnings, it is now a huge convention that is in town, twice a year.
The 41st annual Mrs. America Pageant will once again return to its original home at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino this summer. The Mrs. America Pageant will be held Saturday, August 26 from inside the renowned International Westgate Theater at Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino. The winner of the Mrs. America Pageant will go on to represent the United States in the internationally-televised Mrs. World Pageant.
The famed Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino presents the 40th Tribute to The King, a month-long celebration with casino promotions, food specials and more. Held throughout the month of August, the celebration will include:

Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino Players Club members are invited to dress like “The King.” Participants who dress like “The King” and post their photo on the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino Facebook and Instagram accounts on Thursday, August 17 will receive one free entry into Fresh Buffet.
Following its successful participation in the 2016 PBS Arts Fall Festival, Myron’s Cabaret Jazz at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts will present two concerts by acclaimed group Postmodern Jukebox on August 14, with both shows filmed and available for PBS stations across the country to schedule for broadcast in December 2017. With performances at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., the show will feature highly talented artists including American Idol Season 10 finalist Casey Abrams.

High School Neon Night, an exclusive, end-of-summer bash for high school students returns to Wet’n’Wild Las Vegas on Thursday, Aug. 3 from 7 to 11 p.m. The event, hosted by HOT 97.5 and 106.9 The Q, will feature DJs playing top hits, a surprise live performance, a foam pit, contests and giveaways, giant beach balls and more. Comedian and actor Mike Epps is returning to Las Vegas with a special performance at the Pearl Concert Theater inside Palms Casino Resort on Friday, August 12, 2017 at 8p.m. Mike Epps is a stand-up comedian, actor, film producer and writer from Indianapolis, ID. Since 2000, Epps steadily climbed his way up the stand-up comedy ranks when he was recognized by a national audience in 1995 for appearing on HBO’s Def Comedy Jam (which, years later, he would go on to host). During a performance at LA’s Comedy Store, Epps caught the attention of Ice Cube. This led to the first of three feature films they would do together: the cult hits “Next Friday,” “Friday after Next” and “All About the Benjamins.” Other features include the Hangover franchise, “Faster,” “Hancock,” “Lottery Ticket,” “Next Day Air,” “Roll Bounce,” “The Fighting Temptations” the Resident Evil franchise, “Bait,” “How High,” “Dr. Dolittle 2,” “Talk to Me” and “Guess Who?”
They rocked so hard, they’re coming back to do it again! Eccentric glam metal quartet Steel Panther will electrify the stage for a late summer, four-date run at House of Blues Las Vegas. Friday, August 11, 18, 25 & September 1. Hailing from Los Angeles, CA, the epicenter for rock n’ roll in all its debauchery and glamour, Steel Panther have established themselves as the premier party band, melding hard rock virtuosity with parody and criminally good looks. Famed singer-songwriter and producer Richard Marx will perform his greatest hits during a limited engagement, “Satisfied: Only The Hits,” at Flamingo Las Vegas beginning Aug. 15 through Sept. 2, 2017. The Chicago native has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide and has released several chart-topping singles including “Hold on to the Nights,” “Satisfied” and “Now and Forever.” Fans will experience the pop/rock artist up close like never before in an intimate acoustic setting during “Satisfied: Only The Hits” as Richard performs exciting versions of his greatest hits plus exclusive stories behind his hits.
R&B star August Alsina returns to the House of Blues Las Vegas on August 24, 2017. Born and bred in New Orleans, Alsina is eager to follow in the footsteps of the NOLA music legends that paved his way. After a set of personal setbacks and a series of YouTube covers that generated millions of views, Alsina signed with Def Jam Recordings in 2007. Proving to be a step in the right direction, he released his first album Testimony in 2014 debuting at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. With a lifetime of experiences behind him, and living proof that your past does not dictate your future, Alsina is gearing up to release his third album with Def Jam Recordings. Earlier this year, Alsina gave fans new music with the release of “Lonely.”
Following the excitement of the BIG3 Draft in Las Vegas last weekend where all eight teams finalized their five-man rosters, the BIG3 has released the full 2017 season game matchups, including the BIG3 Championship Finals at T-Mobile Arena Saturday, Aug. 26 at 5 p.m. Tickets for the Finals at T-Mobile Arena go on sale Saturday, May 13 on AXS.com. Each Sunday this summer, BIG3 will bring competitive 3-on-3 half-court basketball to cities throughout the country, including basketball hot beds Brooklyn, Charlotte, Tulsa, Philadelphia, Nashville, Dallas, Lexington (Ky.), Los Angeles, Seattle and Las Vegas. Fans will have the opportunity to experience high-energy match-ups and witness more than 40 of the sport’s most skilled competitors battle for the title of 2017 BIG3 Champions.
Country star Billy Currington is returning to Las Vegas with special guest Walker Hayes for a performance at the Sunset Amphitheater at Sunset Station on Friday, August 4, 2017. Doors open at 7 p.m. Located outdoors at Sunset Station, the Sunset Amphitheater is the perfect destination for a concert experience under the stars. Billy Currington has come a long way from working construction and living in a tiny attic apartment during his early days in Nashville. In the decade since he made his debut with the top ten hit “Walk a Little Straighter,” the Georgia native has parlayed his rich, emotion-laden tenor and unerring song sense into some of the country format’s most memorable hits, including such No. 1s as “Good Directions,” “Must Be Doin’ Something Right” and “People Are Crazy.”
Primus have announced their first tour of 2017 featuring special guests Clutch. The tour will stop by The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on Wednesday, August 9. Primus is currently working on a new studio album which will be released later this year.
Fueled By Ramen recording group Young The Giant has announced the next leg of its hugely successful Home of the Strange Tour. The North American headline dates begin with a performance at the Pearl Concert Theater inside Palms Casino Resort on Friday, August 18, 2017 at 8 p.m. The Home of the Strange Tour celebrates Young The Giant’s third studio album, Home of the Strange, which immediately ascended to #1 on the iTunes Store’s “Top Alternative Albums” chart and #3 on the overall “Top Albums” chart upon its release last August. The band heralded the release with a number of high profile television appearances, including an outdoor concert on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and as one of the select artists on the fall season of critically-acclaimed series “Live from the Artists Den” alongside Sturgill Simpson, Panic! at the Disco and Lumineers. The tour’s first leg saw the band performing to sell out houses across the continent, including stops at such world famous venues as New York’s Radio City Music Hall and The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. Coming off an extraordinary 63 shows in 2016, Rock n’ Roll Hall of Famer Steve Miller is excited to announce his 2017 summer tour campaign. Steve and his band look forward to delving into their deep catalogue of hits from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s. The tour will make a one-night stop at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace on Tuesday, Aug. 8. Joining The Steve Miller Band on the summer 2017 tour is special guest Peter Frampton.
Due to demand, Steve Martin and Martin Short have added two new 2017 dates of their hilarious show “An Evening You Will Forget For The Rest Of Your Lives featuring the Steep Canyon Rangers and Jeff Babko” at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. the two new shows are scheduled Friday, Aug. 25 and Sunday, Oct. 29. The performances are presented jointly by AEG Live and Caesars Entertainment. Audiences can expect an evening of nonstop laughs as the duo recall their iconic careers, creative influences and most memorable encounters, uniquely presented though a blend of stand-up, musical numbers and conversations about their lives in show business.
The month starts off a bit slow as far as the headliners go, but it certainly picks up steam, and of course, September will be crazy.
