June 2016
This newsletter is starting on a sad note:
From the Review-Journal…
EUGENE BALMAIN Eugene A. "Gene" Balmain, 56, passed away unexpectedly at home, Sunday, May 15, 2016. He considered himself a native Las Vegan though he spent his first three years in Concord, Calif. He is survived by his wife, Roberta Nicely; and number of good friends, including his long-time business partner, Frank Sener. Together, they founded and ran Charleston Communications, hosting Vegas Playground (bulletin board) and several Las Vegas-themed websites, including Las Vegas Online Entertainment Guide (lvol.com) and OpenVegas. A private memorial gathering to celebrate Gene's life is pending. If you want to honor Gene, please consider a donation to your favorite charity in his name.
I met Gene when I was teaching an acting class at the community college. He was a non-traditional student wanting to learn more about the acting process. His interest stemmed from his desire to create and post shows and content on this thing called the internet. He had visions of the internet being a tremendous tool to watch shows and get information, and he even felt that in the future, someone would be able to watch shows on demand and possibly even replace television. This was almost a decade before YouTube existed. Gene had a brilliance and vision that only a few people understood. I began writing show reviews and this monthly newsletter for him seventeen years ago. The Las Vegas Online Entertainment Guide (lvol.com) was put up on the internet in 1995…to put this into perspective…Google wasn’t launched until 1998. He created Las Vegas Internet Television (lvitv.com) in 1998 and was putting up shows, interviews, and reviews on demand…this was still seven years before YouTube and Google Videos. He is going to be missed, but much of his work still exists and will certainly live on…on the internet, of course. Here are some of the sites…take a look:

Gene loved Las Vegas.
Well…I, for one, am ready for a vacation.
It’s June!! Isn’t it time for a vacation? It’s summertime …isn’t it time to get away? Please?! Schools are getting out for the year, and for the most part, that means kids will be hanging around the house begging mom and dad to go and do stuff. Vegas, of course, is a popular spot for pool parties and perceived as a spot to get into a bit of mischief. College-aged people will come to Vegas and try to emulate the commercials and the mystique of this town…usually without the success and panache for which they would hope. Sometimes these folks think that normal rules of society don't apply to this town...trust me though; drunk and disorderly and drunk driving will still get you thrown in jail. Families will come in, have a good time, but feel that there is less and less that the entire family can do on the Strip. (Actually, there are a lot of things that the family can do (especially this month,) but most tourists don't venture away from the casinos to find them.) We all want a vacation, and in many respects, things seem to be lightening up for a lot of people. It is time to get away and play.
Normally temperatures never reach 100 degrees until the month of June…and once again, that will be the case this year—by the first or second we’ll have our first 100 degree day, and by the weekend, we should hit the 105 mark…and yes, it is true, it is a dry heat; and yes, that does make it more tolerable. This is good and bad—it is as if you’re standing in a convection oven, rather than a sauna. Without lotion, the dry air will suck out any moisture that you may have in your body, and you will burn faster here than a day at the beach. Summer in Vegas is hot…pools and parties are the main tour de force for the season, and the entertainment usually brings a lot of wonderful surprises throughout the months ahead.
Living dually in Las Vegas and Dallas, makes me appreciate the summer heat of Las Vegas. Dallas = Humid. Las Vegas = Dry. And it really makes a difference. I like the dry.
(An interesting note—especially for people getting married here in the summer, (lots of June brides here,) if you come from a humid climate, yes, the dry air will try and take away the moisture that’s in your body…conversely, your body will go into survival mode and do its best to retain any of the moisture that you have. The result is that your extremities will swell. If you bought the smallest, cutest, tightest shoes back home in anticipation of your wedding here…they will not fit, and if you do manage to get them on, you will be miserable. And just as your feet have swollen, so have your hands…ergo, your rings will not fit either. I have seen way too many brides and grooms working to the point of injury to try and get rings on. A little advice…get comfortable shoes, and make sure that your hands are lathered with lotion prior to coming down the aisle…it will insure that you can slide that ring over your swollen knuckles. Now consequently, this advice does not suggest in any way to stop drinking water…if you don’t drink water, you’ll get heat stroke and be in the hospital rather than the chapel on your wedding day—I’ve seen that too. Drink lots of water while in town and make sure that you’re getting a lot of electrolytes.)
As I am writing this, it is Memorial Day, and Memorial Day has always served as the barometer for the summer season here in Las Vegas…a good day here generally means a good summer. This year, the city is packed and shows and pool parties are selling out across the city…we hope that this means a tremendous summer. In my neighborhood right now it is very, very quiet. The only signs of life are the smells of people barbequing. Four out of every five homes are flying the American flag. There are a lot of people here in Vegas, and I hope that at least some of them remember to give respect to our veterans and armed forces personnel to thank them for these freedoms that we enjoy. This newsletter will come out a few days after today, but to all of the people of the armed forces, both past and present...Thank you!
In an effort to truly appreciate June, I had to ask myself, what is June? Well it is a lot of things…including: National Aquarium Month, Candy Month, Dairy Month, Fight the Filthy Fly Month, Gay Pride Month, National Accordion Awareness Month, National Adopt a Cat Month, Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Month, Rose Month, National Safety month, and Turkey Lovers Month.
And not that you’re going to find a card to go with any of these occasions, but on a daily basis: The first is Dare Day and Flip a Coin Day. The second is National Bubba Day and National Rocky Road Day. The third is Repeat Day (I said "Repeat Day".) The third is Repeat Day (I said "Repeat Day",) and National Doughnut Day always the first Friday in June. The fourth is Applesauce Cake Day, Old Maid's Day, and Hug Your Cat Day. The fifth is World Environment Day. The sixth is National Gardening Exercise Day- Get out and exercise with your plants, and National Yo-Yo Day. It is also Ramadan but the date varies. The seventh is National Chocolate Ice Cream Day. The eighth is Best Friends Day, as well as Name Your Poison Day. The ninth is Donald Duck Day, and the tenth is Iced Tea Day. The eleventh; National Corn on the Cob Day. (At this point I’m thinking to myself, “why did I start this list?” but then… “well, I’ve come this far…now I have to finish.”) The twelfth; Red Rose Day. The thirteenth; Sewing Machine Day. The fourteenth; Flag Day. The fifteenth; Smile Power Day. The sixteenth; Fresh Veggies Day; followed by the seventeenth; Eat Your Vegetables Day. The eighteenth is big. It is Go Fishing Day, International Panic Day, and National Splurge Day, and National Hollerin' Contest Day - third Saturday in June - Oh yeah!! And it’s World Juggler's Day - Saturday closest to June 17th The nineteenth; World Sauntering Day, and Father's Day - third Sunday. The twentieth is Ice Cream Soda Day, and the Summer Solstice. The 21st is Go Skate Day. The 22nd is National Chocolate Eclair Day. The 23rd is National Columnists Day and National Pink Day, and the 24th is Swim a Lap Day, and Take Your Dog to Work Day Friday after Father's Day. The 25th is Log Cabin Day and National Catfish Day. The 26th is Beautician's Day, Forgiveness Day. The 27th is Sun Glasses Day. The 28th is Paul Bunyan Day and Insurance Awareness Day - Now who do you think invented that!?! The 29th is Camera Day, Hug Holiday, and Waffle Iron Day. And finally, June 30th is Meteor Day.
MGM Resorts International won’t start charging locals for parking…for now. Everyone else starts getting charged on June 6th. Company spokesman Gordon Absher said Nevada residents can self-park for free at any MGM resort except during special events at least through Dec. 29. The vehemence of the outrage expressed by Las Vegas residents when MGM first announced the fee plan caught MGM Resorts CEO Jim Murren off guard…Really!!? That certainly doesn’t make him seem like a very smart CEO. MGM continues to play the victim…it costs so much money…other cities charge for parking… Stop it!! It’s corporate greed. That’s all. Piss off.
The Burlesque Hall of Fame weekend will be at The Orleans Hotel from June 2nd to June 5th. It is a showcase for over 100 of the world's top burlesque acts from international entertainers. In 2006, the Burlesque Hall of Fame relocated from Helendale to Las Vegas, NV, in hopes of establishing a permanent, first-rate tourist attraction and research/exhibition space for our one-of-a-kind collection. Today, the museum occupies a space in the Emergency Arts building in the heart of a revitalized Vegas Downtown, where a small part of our several-thousand-piece collection is on display to the public.

Debuting Tuesday, June 7th and kicking off the coveted Las Vegas Film Festival at Inspire Theater, the 100-minute movie will offer festival attendees one-of-a-kind, laugh-out-loud, comedic-action production. Seats to the highly-anticipated screening will be first-come, first-served basis to Las Vegas Film Festival ticket holders. For more information on Dealer, visit http://oogoog.com/dealer .
