February 2023

It’s difficult to find a better place to be, then Las Vegas in February.  The weather is gorgeous.  There are tons of things to do--The Super Bowl, Valentine's Day, and MAGIC; just to name a few.  February is the shortest month of the year, but it’s packed full. February is a busy time for conventions, and is always the start of new things as the city looks ahead to the summer.

Some of the interesting days that occur in February are:  The 2nd is National Groundhog Day.  February 4 is National Thank a Mailman Day. February 5 is National Shower with a Friend Day. The 7th is National Periodic Table Day.  The 8th is National Kite Flying Day.  The 11th is National Don’t Cry Over Spilled Milk day.  February 17 is National Random Acts of Kindness Day.  Also February is An Affair to Remember Month, and the 3rd Week of the month is International Flirting Week.

Chinese New Year 2023 began on January 22.   The 12 Chinese zodiac signs must show tolerance and empathy towards the people they meet to preserve their karmic balance, especially if they wish to avoid unnecessary conflicts.  In 2023, we ring in the Year of the Rabbit, one of 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac. The animal designations of the zodiac follow a 12-year cycle and are always used in the same sequence. Those born in the Year of the Rabbit are said to be talented at many things. They are affectionate people, often excelling at forming close relationships. However, they also appreciate tranquility and seek out peace.

Every February and August, the retail industry convenes in Las Vegas for the United States’ most comprehensive fashion marketplace - MAGIC. Here you will find the latest in apparel, footwear, accessories, and manufacturing. From the height of advanced contemporary luxury brands, to the latest trends in fast fashion, MAGIC fuels the business of fashion.  MAGIC is in town the 13th – 15th to introduce the spring fashions. MAGIC is one of the biggest conventions of the year with nearly 100k attendees...but in addition to this convention; there are also a couple of hundred other conventions that hit the city this month.

Valentine’s Day!  February 14th falls on a Tuesday this year.  Not the best day of the week to come to Vegas for a wedding.  Look for a lighter than usual schedule for the chapels on that day. Normally, Las Vegas hosts nearly 10,000 weddings per month, and on Valentine’s day, they should do about 7,000…which is a sharp drop from times when the 14th lands on a weekend.  There are, however, going to be specials offered by every resort and casino.  How did Valentine’s Day start?  Valentine's Day is a fixed day on the calendar that got lumped into a mid-February holiday on the ancient Roman calendar called Lupercalia—which some historians believe is what led to Valentine's Day being all about love. Lupercalia celebrated fertility, and may have included a ritual in which men and women were paired off by choosing names from a jar. In Ancient Greece, people observed a mid-winter celebration for the marriage of the god Zeus and the goddess Hera.

February 12 - Super Bowl LVII will be held at State Farm Stadium in Arizona.  It will be played between the National Football Conference champion Philadelphia Eagles and the American Football Conference champion Kansas City Chiefs. It should be a great game.  The Eagles are favored by 1.5.  Find a great sports book and have a blast.  A 30-second spot in Super Bowl LVII will costs advertisers $7 million (half a million dollar increase over last year.)

Singing impressionist, who starred in “Frank: The Man, The Music,” which ran for a year, 2014-2015, at the Palazzo Theater, will appear at the Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall on the UNLV campus on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 8 p.m. Anderson’s “One More For The Road” show has him performing the most authentic reenactment of a Sinatra concert. Tickets start at $49.  Direct from Carnegie Hall, “One More for the Road” is an acclaimed production honoring The Great American Songbook—with a 32-piece orchestra, Sinatra’s original charts, an Emmy award-winning makeup artist, and the phenomenal Anderson. The orchestra will feature Vegas’ own Joey Singer, musical conductor and piano; Bob Sachs, bass; Bob Chmel, drums; Daniel Falcone, lead trumpet; and makeup artist Ron Wild.

In Las Vegas, where bigger is better, flash is flashier and music is produced as spectacle, a new locally forward entertainment venue has its sights set on shining a bright spotlight on imaginative indie films, intimate musical performances, and thought-provoking literary moments.  As Las Vegas' only indie film house, storytelling headquarters, and intentional live music venue, The Beverly Theater, is set to debut with a week of events showcasing its programming pillars of Film, Lit, and Live beginning March 3, 2023.

In celebration of Black History Month, join The Mob Museum and Harrison House for an evening dedicated to the iconic Moulin Rouge. Revisit the hotel's shining moments and social influence in a multifaceted program featuring storytelling, music and dance. Enjoy a panel discussion with Anna Bailey, Manny Davis and Katherine Duncan, and performances by local singers, musicians and dancers reminiscent of a night in the Moulin Rouge lounge. A temporary exhibit of Moulin Rouge memorabilia will also be on display throughout the evening.   As the first racially integrated resort in Las Vegas, the Moulin Rouge was the talk of the town when it opened in 1955. It was a national sensation as well, its dancers gracing the cover of Life magazine. Beyond the stage, the Moulin Rouge was a catalyst for civil rights reform in Las Vegas. The resort's vibrant spirit still lingers almost 70 years later.

And in honor of Valentine’s Day:

It's always exciting to get a Valentine's Day card pushed through your door, with no stamp on it - just your name on the envelope.  Except when you're in prison...

Yet again, this Valentine's Day I'll be in my house all alone, watching a film on TV and eating delivery food.  I really can't see a downside.

Igoshows.com is, of course, the place to read the reviews of all of the shows that are in town so that you can be better informed as to what you should expect from a certain production. The reviews are updated as needed to give you the knowledge you need to spend your entertainment dollars better.
