July 2022
Well, it finally got me. After two and a half years of being Covid free…it got me. I had moments of thinking myself invulnerable…I was wrong. My brilliant sister (the one that got her PHD from Yale,) said that Omicron and its variants are the ones that are going to get us all. Fortunately, having Covid is now the rule instead of the exception. And I’m pleased that, so far, my symptoms have been very mild. Things are not yet normal (even though we are desperately pretending they are.) People are eager to get out…determined to party hard and party big. There is a lot of anger out there, too…pent up frustrations that have been brewing for years. July Fourth weekend is upon us, and the expectations are that the city is going to be packed.
July is the hottest month of the year in Las Vegas, and it has already been blisteringly hot. You need a spatula to remove your clothing. It’s hot out there! Stay inside! I've been getting hot flashes, and I’m a man. Stay hydrated! Use sunscreen! You’ll wish you had gotten the cloth seats instead of leather. The thing about living in the desert is...during the summer, it gets hot. There are some essentials that you will need in order to cope with the heat in the desert... sunscreen! Water—stay hydrated, (and try putting fruit in your water (oranges, raspberries, etc) to help with electrolytes,) and be sure to use lotion, and limit your time in the sun. It’s when the beer gut and big butt don't keep you from wearing shorts. The best place to be is inside a casino or a showroom. Death Valley had such a problem with people frying eggs on their sidewalks, that it is now illegal. The pavement is hot. You may have to rethink when and how you walk your dogs. If the pavement is too hot for you to walk on with your bare feet...then your dog will be burning the pads on its paws. When the tourists are not inside; they'll be hanging out on the Strip suffering from heat exhaustion, or by the pool getting sun burnt. Did you know that if you leave your cell phone in the direct sun for even a short period of time, it will overheat and not work? It's also a great time to really enjoy the summer nights.

Our Independence Day is bigger and better here than just about anywhere else in the country. The entire valley is going to part of this celebration. Over a quarter of a million people are expected to be visiting here on the fourth, and if you are anywhere near, or in view of, the Strip you are in for an amazing fireworks display. There are events planned all over the city, and it will be almost impossible to miss. I would suggest seeking high ground...and watching the multiple displays that go out across the city.
The purchase of the "safe and sane" fireworks are legal in Clark County, the local fire departments are hoping that few indulge themselves. After having a long bout of hot weather, the fire alerts are on high to extreme---there is a lot of fuel out there. Wildfires are the plague the southwest and no one wants the situation to be worsened by additional fires caused by fireworks. "Unsafe and Insane" fireworks are available outside of the county, and are supposed to be illegal in Clark County, but they are seen going off all over the city. The police are saying that they’re going to crack down this year (again.) The Fourth is the only holiday that makes me nervous...there are just too many accidents. Do everyone and yourself a favor---watch one of the planned displays.
Élia Beach Club at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, part of Curio Collection by Hilton, will celebrate Fourth of July weekend, July 1 – 3, with performances by Snoop Dogg, Blake Hortsmann and more, sure to please all music fans. The holiday weekend will start off strong with one of Las Vegas’ most well-known DJs, DJ Five headlining on Friday, July 1. Hip-hop superstar Snoop Dogg will take the stage for another can’t-miss performance, bringing his signature West Coast sound on Saturday, July 2. This will mark Snoop’s third performance this season at Élia Beach Club. The weekend will close out as country music fans raise a glass at Élia Beach Club’s first ever country takeover on Sunday, July 3, headlined by Blake Horstmann. Known for rising to reality TV stardom on “The Bachelorette” and “Bachelor in Paradise,” Blake has started his career as a DJ, creating original country music, and recently headlined Stagecoach. Blake will be joined by international DJ Buza.
Naturally 7 will return to M Resort Spa Casino for a much-anticipated performance on Saturday, October 1 inside the M Pavilion. With the release of their latest project, 20/20, Naturally 7 has come full circle, adding a fresh spin on 20 of their fan favorites and celebrating their 20th anniversary in the music industry. Naturally 7 is ready to give audiences all they could hope for, and then some.
The entire Las Vegas valley is invited to celebrate Independence Day at the 28th Annual Summerlin Council Patriotic Parade, Southern Nevada’s largest and most colorful Fourth of July parade. The first full-scale parade since the pandemic started in 2020, this year’s parade is planned to be grander than ever with more than 70 entries, including 25 giant inflatable parade balloons, veteran and military organizations, both patriotic and pop culture-themed floats, performing groups, and representation of four local professional sports teams, including the Vegas Golden Knights, Las Vegas Aces, Las Vegas Aviators and new this year, the Las Vegas Raiders, represented by a 30-foot custom Raiders-branded giant inflatable balloon in the shape of a football. New to the parade this year is float, “The Magic of Encanto,” that will join several popular and returning patriotic-themed entries, including “A Salute to the Military,” honoring the service men and women from Nellis and Creech Air Force Bases; “America Sings!” featuring the Desert Angels gospel choir; “America Standing Tall” featuring a 15-foot Miss Stars and Stripes towering high above the crowd; “A Very Vegas Birthday” with a special appearance by Elvis; and “Dancing in the Streets” by the Contemporary West Dance Theatre ARTSWORK Pro. More than 2,500 people are expected to participate in the parade and more than 500 volunteers from dozens of local schools and community groups will assist with parade operations. Over 20,000 cubic feet of helium will be used for the more than 25 giant inflatables. Attendance along the parade route is expected to top 50,000 people. The parade is organized by The Summerlin Council, the nonprofit arm of the Summerlin Community Association dedicated to the social, educational, and recreational enrichment of residents. The parade is open to the public. Everyone is encouraged to arrive early, bring water and wear sunscreen.
