December 2020
And just like that, everything was closed again. A “pause,” they call it…for three weeks. So many shows had just opened with enthusiasm and excitement, only to be closed again. There are a few shows that are still trying to brave it out, but with a limit of 50 people in the audience, it’s tough to pay the rent. But with the virus running rampant throughout our society, the balance between health and economy is precarious. Go vaccine!!
Happy Holidays! It is a sincere wish in an enigmatic year.
The weeks before Christmas normally are the slowest time of the year in Vegas. This year, it will probably be a ghost town. And usually…just before New Year’s, the town gets neurotic…but this year…the iconic fireworks show on the Las Vegas Strip has been cancelled.
Yes, you heard that right. The fireworks show has been cancelled. On the bright side, I’ve seen hotel rooms advertized starting at $22, in the hopes of getting anyone to come to town. The only live fireworks show currently scheduled is at the Plaza Hotel & Casino in downtown Las Vegas. If you go to Fremont Street to celebrate the evening, there will be a lot of restrictions.
The holidays always bring joys and challenges to all of us…that will be especially true this year. I am looking forward to a simple homebound holiday without the pressure of doing anything… I want to see friends, but it will be limited due to the pandemic. I want to spend time with family, perhaps by Zoom. I’m going to put bags together for homeless people (socks, water, food, etc.) I actually try to have bags for the homeless in my car on a year-round basis, (because the homeless are just as hungry in January.) but now have time to put them all together. I’ll drive around and look at Christmas lights. I’ll do a little decorating, and I’ll buy a couple of things for a couple of people.
Hanukkah 2020 begins Thursday evening, December 10, 2020 and continues through Friday, December 18, 2020
Kwanzaa 2020 begins Saturday, December 26 and ends, January 2.
Christmas is December 25, 2020.
It’s difficult to say what is actually open…attractions open…and then they close. Events are scheduled, and then they are not. Whatever you want to do, I would suggest that you call ahead and make sure they are actually open…including restaurants.
Opportunity Village’s, "The Magical Forest," is cancelled.
“The Great Santa Run” will be virtual this year…I’m not really sure what that means, but it is an important fundraiser for Opportunity Village.
“The Gift of Lights,” at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, is operating. This will be the seventh year that it is being hosted there. “The Gift of Lights” is a holiday drive-thru spectacular featuring millions of twinkling and animated displays, and part of the proceeds go to charities. And you can also receive a discount on the admission if you bring a bag of stuff for Goodwill. Being at the Speedway is a bit of a drive to get to it, but it will be worth it.
Other holiday events include the Chocolate Wonderland at the Ethel M Botanical Cactus Garden, which is free; but it is by reservation only.
There is hope for the future:
