Entertainment is still not moving forward, and so I would like to ask my readers to write me…tell me what you miss, tell me what you are looking forward to, and tell me what you have been doing during this time and what you have achieved. This is the 20th year anniversary of this newsletter. With both the entertainment news and show reviews, my goal has been to let people know what to expect when they come to town or want to go to a show. I am proud to have been able to bring you the news of what is happening in Las Vegas entertainment, and I look forward to the years to come.
We are moving into month five of our physically distant, mask wearing existence. It has been arduous, grueling, laborious, and stressful. We bump and jerk our way back to work…only to find ourselves out of work again. The stopping and starting is giving us whiplash. The unemployment issues that this state has are unconscionable…five months, and there are still tens of thousands of people that have so far received nothing.
And the infections keep rising.
The word from some casino entertainment executives has been that entertainment is not even being considered until March of 2021…the ones that are still there. MGM, Boyd, and Sahara have gotten rid of their entertainment departments for the time being.
The CES convention just cancelled for January of 2021.
Bally’s just reopened, while MGM is making more furloughed workers permanent layoffs. Circus Circus and Tropicana are making more layoffs permanent. Nevada has the highest unemployment rate in the country…and an inadequate unemployment system.
Sports are back…sort of. We may or may not continue with baseball. So far, the NBA looks like it will move ahead. We may or may not have football. Movie theaters are schedule to reopen at the end of this month in Nevada…unless something changes.
We’re in a world that we can’t count on.
August is usually a slow month in Vegas anyway…well; it’s just too damn hot! July is recorded as the hottest month of the year, but it is so dry that you don’t really feel it. August is monsoon season…so we get a lot of afternoon thunderstorms…which adds a lot of humidity to the air…so it feels a lot worse than July.
August is the eighth month of the year in the Gregorian calendar and its predecessor, the Julian calendar. The month of August was originally named Sextilis in Latin since it was the sixth month in the ancient Roman calendar. It became the eighth month with a length of 29 days around 700 BCE when January and February were added to the year. Julius Caesar added two days to the month around 45 BCE. It was later renamed to honor Augustus Caesar in 8 BCE. Its birth flower is the gladiolus or poppy which represents beauty, strength, love, marriage and family. The birthstone for August is the peridot or onyx.
