October 2022

#VegasStrong –October 1st will be five years since the mass shooting in Las Vegas…and my heart still sinks at the thought of it all.  It is a burden that we Las Vegans will always carry.  The thing that I take away from this event…five years later is:  We are Vegas Strong!

Yay!! It’s October!  October is probably the biggest, busiest, and ‘funnest’ month of the year in Las Vegas.  And pretty much everything is back to normal around here.  The weather is beautiful, the casinos are busy, and the events are plentiful.  Las Vegans are happy during October. When we’re busy, we’re happy. The heat of the summer is gone, and we have some great high points in the month; Football, Hockey, Festivals, and of course, Halloween is always a big celebration. October is the best month of the year.  It’s time for the Golden Knights and the Raiders!  We are suddenly a city of hockey and football fans.

Halloween in Las Vegas is a full contact holiday.  Most venues will host some sort of costumed ball—usually having to do with some sort of sexual content, and the more outrageous the better. There are a couple of Fetish and Fantasy balls, several Erotic balls, and the Pimp an’ Ho ball. It’s a strange night and not one for the timid. It is a huge party in Las Vegas. There is not a better city in which to celebrate Hallow’s Eve.

The daily designations include: October 2 is National Name Your Car Day and World Smile Day.  October 4 is National Taco Day, Golf Day, and Vodka Day.  October 5 is National Do Something Nice Day.  October 8 is National Poetry Day.  October 9 is Leif Erikson Day. October 11 is National Coming Out Day. October 12 is National Free Thought Day, National Kick Butt Day, Native American Day, and Columbus Day (I do find it amusing that Kick Butt day is the day after Coming Out day.)  October 15 is National I Love Lucy Day.  October 24 is National Bologna Day.  October 25 is Chucky, The Notorious Killer Doll Day.  October 28 is National Chocolate Day.  October 30 is National Frankenstein Day.  And October 31 is National Knock-Knock Jokes Day, Magic Day, Girl Scout Founder’s Day, and of course, Halloween.

A medieval kingdom will take over Sunset Park with lavishly costumed knights, knaves, fine ladies and wenches as Clark County Parks and Recreation present the annual Age of Chivalry Renaissance Festival October 7, 2022 - October 9, 2022. Several stages will feature entertainment with costumed performers presenting more than 50 shows per day along with historical re-enactments, jousting tournaments, medieval pageantry and more than 100 artisans - including blacksmiths, stained glass designers, jewelers, wood workers, toy makers, perfume blenders, stone carvers and sword, dagger and armor craftsman -- to demonstrate and sell their wares. Authentic food, from fish and chips to an English feast, also will be available as well as beer and ales for adults with proper identification. Concerts all weekend will feature local acts with nationally known acts, as well as a royal parade with kings, queens, warriors and peasants. The festival offers full-contact jousting tournaments; no-holds-barred gladiator battles; black powder demonstrations, strolling minstrels, contortionists, magicians, storytellers, jokers, jugglers, flame eaters, belly dancers, trained parrots and pirates. Additional attractions include rides, bow and arrow and axe target games, medieval barber and surgeon demonstrations and Renaissance guilds.

In addition to its regular Spanish language tours offered every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening, The Neon Museum celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, with the addition of special Gallery Talks during general admission hours in the afternoon daily. These 15-minute talks highlight the history behind specific signs and properties that are relevant to the Hispanic community, including The Flamingo, The El Cortez, and La Concha.

The Flamingo Hotel & Casino – Currently the oldest property on The Strip, opening in 1946, signage from the Flamingo in the Neon Boneyard dates to 1976 and was designed by Raul Rodriguez. An award-winning designer of floats for the Tournament of Roses parade in Pasadena, California, Rodriguez designed more than 500 floats, including his first float when he was just 14 years old. While he worked for Heath and Company, Rodriguez visited Las Vegas and met with Barron Hilton, who had just bought the Flamingo hotel. Rodriguez would go on to design the iconic feathered Flamingo sign, noting that signs and floats are similar in design: “both are only granted a few seconds from viewers to catch their attention.” Rodriguez is portrayed in the Museum’s Las Vegas Luminaries mural.

El Cortez Hotel & Casino – The oldest continuing hotel and casino operating under the same name, opening in 1941, the El Cortez is on the National Register of Historic Places and famous for its interior and exterior Spanish Colonial design. The rooftop signage was installed in 1952 and still sits atop the building, 70 years later.

La Concha Motel – Meaning ‘the shell’ in Spanish, La Concha opened in 1961 and was next to the Riviera, across from Circus Circus on the north end of The Strip. The Neon Boneyard has La Concha’s restored shell-shaped sign as well as the iconic hotel lobby that was disassembled into 8 pieces, transported to its current location, and reassembled to serve as the Museum’s visitor center after the property closed in 2004.

The project, which took a total of more than 100 hours, included repairing damaged sheet metal to return the sign to its original shape and repainting the nearly 40-year-old sign. Hartlauer also replaced 576 light bulbs and installed 14 new border neon units around the Plaza letters.

An interesting note…if your birthday is at the end of September or in the first part of October, your parents probably had sex on New Year’s Eve.
