September 2021

I’m tired of wearing a mask…things are back to, sort of, normal.

The weather always changes dramatically from August to September—the blistering heat generally ends, and fall floats gently in the air.  We’ll still have some hot days ahead, but this month, we’ll at least get below 100.  School is back in session.  Football will start up again this month (I’m very happy about that.)   We have Labor Day, Mexican Independence, and the 20th anniversary of September 11th; I’ll be flying my flag and taking time to remember the heroes, the horror, the evil, and the strength that was brought about because of all of those events.  It’s also time to change the watering schedule for the yard.

September (from Latin septem, "seven") was originally the seventh of ten months in the oldest known Roman calendar.   After the calendar reform that added January and February to the beginning of the year, September became the ninth month but retained its name. It had 29 days until the Julian reform, which added a day.

The autumnal equinox—also called the September or fall equinox—is the astronomical start of the fall season in the Northern Hemisphere and the spring season in the Southern Hemisphere.  It will be on September 22nd.  The word “equinox” comes from Latin aequus, meaning “equal,” and nox, “night.” On the equinox, day and night are roughly equal in terms of length. During the equinox, the Sun crosses what we call the “celestial equator”—an imaginary extension into space of Earth’s equator line. The equinox occurs precisely when the Sun’s center passes through this line. When the Sun crosses the equator from north to south, this marks the autumnal equinox; when it crosses from south to north, this marks the vernal equinox.

There are some very fascinating national designations for September…I’ll highlight a few that I find the most interesting…

September 1st is National No Rhyme (Nor Reason) Day. The First Friday in September is National Lazy Mom’s Day.  International Bacon Day is the Saturday before Labor Day, and September 15th is National Linguine Day, National Double Cheeseburger Day, and Google.com Day.  Interestingly, September 18th is National Cheeseburger Day (just a few days after Double Cheeseburger day.)  September 20th is National Punch Day and Wife Appreciation Day…is that just bad taste?  September 22nd is Hobbit Day, and the 23rd is Celebrate Bi-sexuality Day.  In spite of bad press the 26th is National Shamu the Whale Day and the 27th is National Corned Beef Hash Day.  And one of my favorites…September 30th is Blasphemy Day.

Celebrate Fall with this 50+ annual tradition, the Pahrump Fall Festival, September 23 - 26! The festival started out as a simple harvest festival where a couple hundred people gathered to share the harvest, have fun and eat some good barbecue. Today, the festival starts on a Thursday and continues for four days ending on Sunday. This event is brought to you by the Town of Pahrump providing free admission to the festival and entertainment. There is a fee for the rodeo and unlimited carnival ride bracelets are available for purchase. The Fall Festival includes a parade that commemorates the occasion traveling down Highway 160. Saturday traffic comes to a stop on Highway 160 as the annual parade travels down the highway for about 2 miles with over 50 floats. Hundreds stand and cheer on the high school marching band and carnival of floats as they make their way down the town’s main highway.  This year’s theme is Stars & Stripes.
